A couple years back, a friend in Broad Ripple called me in a panic. After a heavy summer storm, her basement carpet was damp, and the mulch around her foundation looked like a river washed through it. She’d been pointing her downspouts right at the corner of the house with those little splash blocks. She thought that was enough. It wasn’t. Here in central Indiana, we get slammed by intense summer thunderstorms. And it’s not just the rain—it’s the soil. If you’ve ever dug a hole in your yard, you know: clay. Heavy, dense, and slower to drain than a bathtub with a twist-off stopper. When water dumps out of a downspout right next to the house, the clay holds it there like a moat. That constant pressure against your foundation? It seeps into basements, causes musty smells, peeling paint, and over time, can even crack foundation walls.

I’ve walked through homes in Meridian-Kessler and Irvington where the basement smelled like a damp basement from the 70s—all because downspouts were barely pushing water two feet from the house. No amount of dehumidifiers fixes that if the water’s still seeping in.

So how far should that water go? Aim for 6 to 10 feet from the foundation, at minimum. On flat lots or really heavy clay, push it farther—maybe 15 feet or more. It’s not just about distance, though. It’s about where the water ends up and how it gets there.

Above-Ground Fixes: When Splash Blocks Just Don’t Cut It

Splash blocks are the original “I did something” solution. They’re cheap, you can grab one at any hardware store, and they’re better than nothing. But they only carry water a couple feet, and on a sloped yard, that water can still run right back toward the foundation. I’ve seen plenty of splash blocks half-buried in mud, doing more to channel water under them than away.

Rigid or hinged downspout extensions are the next step up. They can get you that 6–10 feet, and they lay flat along the ground. But they’re visible, can be a trip hazard, and if you’re in an HOA community like those in Carmel or Fishers, upper management might not love the look. Also, lawnmowers eat them. I’ve repaired enough chewed-up extensions to know: they work, but they need babysitting.

For many homeowners, the real answer is buried. Out of sight, out of mind, and way more effective.

Going Underground: The Better Way for Most Indy Homes

Underground downspout drains carry water away in a pipe, releasing it to a safe spot—usually a pop-up emitter in the turf or a daylight outlet to a rock splash zone. The key is the pipe. Not all pipe is created equal.

Corrugated black pipe is what you’ll find at the box store, and it’s okay for emergencies. But over time, those ridges catch leaves and silt, creating clogs you can’t easily flush out. For a long-term fix, use smooth-wall PVC—usually SDR-35, the green stuff. It’s stiffer, flows better, and doesn’t trap debris. If you’re going to bury it, do it once and do it right.

Slope matters. You want a steady, gentle fall—about 1% slope, which is roughly an eighth of an inch drop per foot. That’s enough to let water move without overtaxing the pipe. Too shallow and water pools; too steep and it can empty too fast and erode the outlet. On dead-flat lots like some in Greenwood or Westfield, a pro will survey the yard and might use a slight crowned route to keep the water moving. It’s doable.

At the outlet, a pop-up emitter sits flush with the ground and only opens when water flows. Tuck it in a turf area or surround it with a little rock basin to prevent a mud pit. Keep it away from sidewalks and property lines—icy patches in winter cause real problems.

And one big no-no: never tie downspout drains into your sewer line or a sump pump discharge. The city of Indianapolis won’t allow it, and it’ll back up when you least expect it. Sump pumps and downspouts run separate for a reason. If you’re thinking of tapping into a storm drain or curb cut, check with the city’s rules first. You don’t want a surprise fine or a neighbor dispute.

Gutter Talk: Size Matters and So Does Maintenance

Even the best underground pipe can’t handle water that never gets there. Gutters and downspouts do the catching, and if they’re too small, water spills over the sides. Around here, the standard 2x3-inch downspout often isn’t enough. For Midwest cloudbursts, 3x4-inch downspouts are worth every penny. They move more water, faster, and resist clogging better. If you’ve got a big roof or lots of valleys, you’ll need more downspouts—rule of thumb is one per 40 linear feet of gutter, but more is better on complex homes.

And don’t skip leaf guards. Mature trees in neighborhoods like Meridian-Kessler dump loads of leaves each fall. Without guards, downspouts clog and water backs up under shingles or pours over gutters, undoing all your drainage work. Clean gutters seasonally, flush the underground drains once a year, and check pop-up emitters after big storms. A little maintenance beats a basement flood.

Getting It Done Right (Without the Headaches)

I get the hesitation. Buried drains sound complicated and expensive. But if you’ve ever spent a Sunday afternoon wet-vacuuming your basement or replacing rotted mulch, you know the cost of doing nothing.

The best projects start with a real plan: an on-site look at your roof, soil, slopes, and utility lines (always call 811 before digging). Then a written scope that spells out materials—like SDR-35 pipe, long-sweep elbows, and glued PVC joints—plus layout and outlet placement. No surprises.

A good crew will trench carefully, backfill with proper bedding, use geotextile fabric where needed, and restore your landscaping so you’d never know they were there. It’s a premium finish because it’s meant to last decades, not just get you through the next rain.
